Lucy Rose “Spiritual Blindness” ~
When God measures man, He puts the tape around his heart — not his head. – Guideposts
LUCY ROSE by ROSIE LORD
The success of acoustic singer-songwriter Laura Marling has spawned a new breed of the female musician. It’s now acceptable to write songs as well as just sing them, and dance routines are no longer part of a record deal contract. Despite the presence of Emmy the Great and Alessi’s Ark on the indie/folk scene, there hasn’t been a female folk singer-songwriter on the radar since Laura’s debut. Enter Lucy Rose. Having said that, you wouldn’t catch Lucy defining herself as a folk artist, in previous interviews Lucy’s expressed an interest in finding “somewhere in the middle” of the current folk and pop female genres.
Lucy kept her experiments with music private until she left school, writing only in her bedroom and never performing her songs for friends or family. It was thanks to some highly-tipped early myspace demos, and a successful run of indie-night showcases at pubs and clubs, Lucy was chosen by Bombay Bicycle Club frontman Jack Steadman to feature as the female vocal on their critically acclaimed second album, Flaws. Lucy then joined the band on a sold-out church tour of the UK, gathering a barrage of new fans with every date. Despite remaining unsigned, Lucy has built a strong following on myspace, facebook and twitter, acting as another example that the influence of the internet can be incredibly beneficial to new artists.
Lucy’s myspace boasts 7 impressive self-produced tracks, including the incredibly catchy acoustic number Middle of the Bed, which features some really lovely layered harmonies. Lucy’s voice has a slight husk to it, emphasised when having been recorded, which makes it distinctive, and recognisable among other female singer-songwriters for all the right reasons. Standout tracks on the playlist include Don’t You Worry; a stunning acoustic number with an incredibly melodic chorus, and Bull to the Red, a personal favourite due to the depth of the lyrics and the emotion behind Lucy’s voice. Also featuring on her myspace is a video session recorded with watchlistentell, an incredibly popular youtube channel and another personal favourite. The session includes Night Bus, arguably Lucy’s strongest song to date. It’s one of watchlistentell’s most popular videos, and bookmarked on my computer for its sheer brilliance.
Having seen her live, at Union Chapel in London, quite a distance from her open-mic nights of late 2009, I can safely say she commands a silence throughout the audience. Playing live accompanied only by an acoustic guitar really allows Lucy’s voice to make an impact, so much so that I nearly shed a tear and proves that an intimate setting is definitely the best place to witness her live show. Lucy was able to have such an effect on the crowd without the aid of a band, and appreciates when “the audience enjoy something personal you’ve written”, and the audience definitely enjoyed it. Despite being beautifully eloquent in her lyrics, Lucy is shy in person, and keeps the between-song chit-chat to a minimum, neglecting to even introduce herself as she begins. This awkwardness adds to Lucy’s likeability, and it strikes me that she really does bear similarities to Laura Marling. Both in genre and personality, Lucy reminds me of Laura as she was starting out, which is the highest compliment I could give. Lyrically, however, Lucy’s music differs to Laura’s, if only subtly. Whereas Laura has a tendency to keep the listener at arm’s length, often singing in metaphors and using cryptic references to “captains” and “husbands”, Lucy quite literally bears all in her music, especially in myspace track “Bull to the Red”, in which the lyrics “I’m burning all my bridges just to be with you, and you make me smile when I should cry” really validate Lucy’s claims that she “would never write a song if it didn’t mean something to me.” Throughout her set I found it difficult to believe it was Lucy’s first tour, and that she was only 21.
I find it difficult to find fault in Lucy Rose. Her music is beautiful, all 8 songs available on her myspace would fit comfortably on a debut EP, and she is more than able to compete with the likes of Emmy the Great, and indeed Laura Marling. To truly appreciate Lucy Rose, I’d recommend catching her live shows, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
