Rabbits out of the cages!

Animal lover Morrissey has given his backing to FOUR PAWS’s new animation about rabbit factory farming. Legendary celebrity and singer Morrissey provided the iconic song Everyday is like Sunday as the lead soundtrack for the short 1.19 min campaign film – Rabbits Out Of The Cages.Everyday is like Sunday / everyday is silent and grey /… Etch on a postcard: “how I dearly wish I was not here…”

Factory farmed caged rabbits have limited space to lie stretched out or sit up on their hind legs. The rabbits are forced to live in cramped and barren conditions. It is not uncommon for bone disorders and foot inflammations to develop, as well as other excruciating conditions. Farmed rabbits may develop neurotic behaviours to relieve the stress caused by their unnatural living conditions

What you can do:

1. Avoid buying meat from intensively farmed rabbits and encourage friends and family to do the same, better still, go vegan!
2. If your local supermarket stocks farmed rabbit, write to them to ask about the conditions the animals are reared in and ask them not to stock meat from rabbits farmed in cages.
3. Write to your local newspaper to highlight the welfare problems and suffering of farmed rabbits or ask your local radio station to cover the issue.

FOUR PAWS NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO END THE FACTORY FARMING OF RABBITS

As you may be aware, Four Paws campaigns to end the factory farming of rabbits in cages throughout Europe. The welfare of farmed rabbits is in need of urgent attention. The majority of caged systems not too dissimilar to the barren and cramped battery cages used for egg laying hens, which you may be aware will be banned in Europe in 2012. Rabbits are denied the opportunity of social interaction, may suffer from weakened bones, are unable to adopt normal postures, move comfortably or even hop.

Early Day Motion on Rabbit Welfare

Early Day Motions enable Members of Parliament (MPs) to express their opinion on a subject and bring attention to it. If enough signatures are gathered it can put pressure on Government Ministers to take action. It is also a wonderful opportunity to generate public and media interest.

Adrian Sanders MP has put forward an Early Day Motion (EDM) 1515, before the House which seeks to improve the welfare of farmed rabbits in the UK.

You can make your voice heard – just follow these 3 easy steps!

1. If you don’t know the name of your local MP click on http://www.parliament.uk/mpslordsandoffices/index.cfm and enter your postcode to find their name, this will take you to a handy link for you to email them from.

2. Click on http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=38685&SESSION=899 which will show you the wording of the EDM, with a list of MP’s who have already signed it (on the right-hand-side). If your local MP has already signed it then you need not take further action.

3. Write a short email mentioning EDM 1515 on Rabbit Welfare, requesting that they show support for the Motion by signing it. A brief, polite request written in your own words gives it the personal touch.

Please keep Four Paws informed of any responses by emailing Marie-Claire Macintosh, Head of Programmes on marie-claire.macintosh@four-paws.org.uk

FOUR PAWS

For almost two decades, FOUR PAWS has consistently and successfully focused on one goal: to help animals – abused due to economic, scientific or other reasons – to their rights.

They say:

Our vision is a world without animal suffering. We view ourselves as the advocate and champion of those who have no voice of their own, namely animals. The common foundation for this is the respect for all forms of life and the deep conviction that every organism has a right to be treated with consideration and to live a life with dignity that complies with its needs. Animals are sentient creatures and therefore subjectively perceive the world; we as humans bear responsibility for them.

For us, the goals of animal protection, human safety and nature conservation are inseparably linked. We therefore feel a solidarity with all those who use peaceful and legal means to achieve a respectful coexistence with one another and with the environment. We as an animal protection organisation seek to contribute our share to achieving this goal.
