From 1956 Martin Luther King Junior was the dominant leader in African Americans’ quest for civil rights and a better life in general. Martin Luther King firmly believed that the power of love, essential to his idea of non-violent resistance, could serve as the most effective weapon against a racist and unjust social system. His method of non-violent resistance greatly helped his people achieve freedom and fairer treatment in later years to come. King was the chief spokesman for non-violent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law, until his assassination in 1968

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States holiday marking the birthdate of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday, January 15th. In 2010 it will observed on January 18th.
The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000
The vegan lifestyle is a practical philosophy of non-violence:
King’s son Dexter Scott King has been a dedicated vegan and animal rights activist since the late 1980s. Though it is impossible to meet Dexter Scott King and not be reminded of his illustrious father, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, Dexter has his own identity and message. As president of the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Non-violent Social Change, he credits his vegan diet with giving him strength to further the goals of equality and justice.

King, was introduced to vegetarianism by comedian/activist Dick Gregory, who runs a vegan health spa in the Bahamas. After visiting Gregory’s spa, King realized he felt healthier in body and soul when eating whole, natural foods.
“Veganism has given me a higher level of awareness and spirituality, primary because the energy associated with eating has shifted to other areas,” he says.
GO VEGAN – it is non-violence in practice, and a compassionate way of living that brings together spirituality and practicality.
