On 18th September 2010, The Save-Me Campaign launched a National Day Of Action for British Wild Animals.
Created in April 2010 by Queen founder member Brian May, ‘Save-Me’ is a campaign dedicated to keeping hunting with dogs banned within the UK, and advocating the humane treatment of all animals. The campaign came into being because, prior to the General Election, David Cameron announced his hope, if the Conservatives came to power, of repealing the Hunting Act 2004. A repeal would allow blood sports, including the hunting and killing of foxes, stags and hares using packs of dogs, once again to become legal.
The Coalition Government has announced its intention to introduce a motion, to propose that a bill to repeal the Hunting Act be brought before Parliament. If the motion were successful, and if such a Repeal Bill were passed, the Hunting Act would quickly be quashed – a disaster for Britain’s wild animals. No date for the motion has yet been announced, but the threat still exists.
In order to maximise the power of the public, the majority of whom who are opposed to this return to cruelty in the countryside, Save-Me, in association with Animal Aid, Uncaged and Viva!, together with other concerned parties, announced a National Day of Action for British Wild Animals on 18th September 2010. It will also launch an ongoing petition to the Government to support the Hunting Ban (see link above)
In 2009, Ipsos MORI published the results of a public poll on hunting. It found that 75% of the general public support the ban on fox hunting, 84% think the ban on deer hunting should stay in place, and 85% say hare coursing and hunting should remain illegal. In rural communities, 72% believe that fox hunting should NOT be made legal again.
Save-Me is calling on all members of the public to alert their local MP to the disastrous potential consequences of a repeal of the Act, and urge them to vote with the views of their constituents.
Postcards with tear-off letters were produced, to be signed and sent directly to local MPs, asking for their support. On September 18th, many street stalls were set up across the country where people could sign these cards and the Save-Me petition against the repeal. These actions, together with key media presentations, aim to start a ball rolling, to promote public awareness in Britain, and eventually, to reinforce the power of the Hunting Act, ensuring a future for Britain in which all our wildlife is protected from persecution
Even if you did not take part in National Day of Action, it’s not too late to do something. Please contact your MP and tell them how you want them to vote when the Bill to overturn the foxhunting ban is introduced – click HERE for petition and to find out what your MP’s views are. Also go to League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) website and use their excellent system to send an email to your MP. It only takes a few moments: http://www.league.org.uk/content.aspx?CategoryID=357 -
